Sam & Dave – Hospitium York

I’m trying to catch up on lots of blog posts after a really busy summer. We’ve covered loads of weddings over the past few months and this weekend (finally!!) I’ve got a completely free weekend, so I’m really looking forward to having some fun with my kids.

Anyway, back to business for now. I thought I’d do a post about Sam & Dave’s civil partnership celebrations which we covered back in July. Dave has just produced his own gorgeous slideshow and put it onto YouTube so it gave me a bit of a kick up the backside to do my own and blog it.

Dave & Sam chose to tie the knot at the Hospitium in York, a fantastic venue. Both Lou and I joined them and their families at their house which was just a short walk to the centre of York. The guys both looked fantastic in their coordinating suits and amazing shoes (check out the pics below). It was lovely being able to walk with the guys into York which is such an amazingly photogenic city. They stopped off for a drink in the Guy Fawkes pub (where the naughty gunpowder plotter was born, fact fans) than strolled back through the museum gardens to the Hospitium where their guests were there to greet them.

The purple and blue theme continued inside with some amazing flowers and stunning orders of service, menus etc. all designed by Sam. After a lovely ceremony it was back out into the sunshine for drinks and nibbles before  heading upstairs for the wedding breakfast. I have to mention the cake which not only looked great from the outside, but the inside was rainbow coloured. Apparently this is really difficult to achieve so kudos to the cakemaker!

Sam & Dave, we loved being a part of your celebrations and we’d like to wish you lots of happiness for your future together.

Becky & Simon – Oulton Hall Wedding

Just a quick post from a recent wedding we covered for Becky and Simon. If the facilities and timings at the reception venue allow for it, whilst everyone is enjoying the wedding breakfast we like to produce a slideshow of wedding photos from the day so far to show at the evening reception. We were able to do this last week at Becky and Simon’s wedding and I’ve linked to the slideshow below.

Becky was getting ready at Oulton Hall which is an amazing venue. The suites are huge so the preparation photos always look amazing. Lou spent the morning at Simon’s parents’ house in Wetherby (at this point Lou would like to thank Simon’s brother in law for providing her with a bacon sandwich which went down a treat!). The boys then moved onto nearby Bramham for a quick drink in the local pub before the ceremony in the village church.

After a lovely ceremony, lots of confetti and a few piccies everyone headed back to Oulton Hall for the reception. Fortunately the weather was OK so we could use the gardens for photos, but Oulton Hall is one of those venues where the interiors are as photogenic as the exteriors which is one of the reasons we really love working there.

Becky and Simon were such a fun couple and an absolute treat to photograph and we’d like to say thank you to them for including us in their plans. Here are a few images from their day, along with their evening slideshow.

Rosie + Katie Hazlewood Castle

A few weeks ago we spent a fantastic day at Hazlewood Castle with Rosie & Katie (and their friends and families) for their civil partnership celebrations.

As the girls were getting ready together, Lou and I were together in the morning which made for a lovely change for us. While I was recording preparations in the bridal suite Lou spent some time around the castle capturing some great shots of the grounds and also the ceremony and reception rooms.

Both Rosie and Katie looked amazing in their hand made suits and their outfits were completed with matching Converses which got the Barber seal of approval (both Lou and I are Converse afficionados!)

After a lovely ceremony in the Old Dining Room Rosie, Katie and their guests went outside for drinks and photos. Guest of honour (but unfortunatley unable to get into the ceremony..) was Katie’s gorgeous Mini Cooper which was also dressed for the occasion with ribbons, balloons and cans.

Then it was back into the Great Hall for the wedding breakfast and some really lovely speeches before the evening reception really got going.

Rosie & Katie, we’d both like to thank you for inviting us to be part of your special day and we wish you lots of happiness together.

One-Day Wedding Workshop // A Great Success!

Last Tuesday we ran our first One-Day Wedding workshop at Woodlands Hotel in Leeds

It was an ace day, filling 8 eager minds with details on how we 3B approach wedding photography

Mr Barber kicked the day off with a classroom session on the importance of the pre-wedding shoot

Then Phil & I split delegates into two groups to show delegates how we shoot 2 pre-wed couples, before letting them take turns shooting.

We wanted to use real couples, rather than models, to show the love and also to show how we make real people feel comfortable in front of our cameras.

This couple Jo & Phil are friends of Clare’s who’d recently married and so jumped at the chance to dress up again & party with us.

Laura & Jamie were a former couple of Phil’s & were well up for playing dress up again.

We showed our delegates the kind of details we look for.

It was drizzling when we started, so showed them how to handle England’s ever changeable weather

A few compositional ideas

And how to communicate with a couple to get them relaxed

A bit of back light flare technique

We’d been supplied a beautiful bouquet, buttonhole & table flowers by our favourite florist in the business, Fiona of Firenza Floral Design

Here’s our 2nd time delegate Natasha photographing our mock wedding breakfast table setup

After lunch the girls donned their frocks & although we like to shoot naturally and unstaged, our makeup artist did a few staged makeup shots.

Laura, looking beautiful.

It’s little wonder why the girls wanted to dress up again when they had stunning dresses like these!

A detail of Phil’s button hole

I like this moment of Jo on the steps.

A kooky compositional bridal detail from Phil.

We really couldn’t complain about the sunlight…

…or the model behaviour we got out of our couples

Jamie even pimped his outfit a with fun footwear

We really hoped we did Jo & Phil proud with a new set of wedding images

They put in so much to help us get what we needed & were very natural in front of the lenses; despite the fact that there were 5 photographers at a time coming at them!

We showed delegates how we like to shoot solo portraits…

…and a bit about depth of field

Personally I like this one of them looking at another delegate

Another moment

And possibly, in my opinion, the most weddingy snap of the day, on the Woodlands steps.

After reading the 3B Feedback Questionnaire it appeared that all our delegates were super pleased with the day and content. We feel we struck the perfect balance to introduce the class to how we approach wedding photography, and how we get the most out of photographing real, non-model couples. We’re excited to do another workshop early in 2011. In the meantime we’re preparing for our Exposing Flash Workshop on November 9th this year! If you’re interested, download the brochure by clicking here.

So thank you again to our couples, Jo & Phil and Laura & Jamie, Fiona from Firenza for the flowers, our makeup artist Lauren & to all our delegates for making the 3B One-Day Wedding Workshop such a great success!
