Flash Day!

flash-002

Today has been a Good Day. A few weeks ago Barnaby Aldrick, Rob Booker and I were having one of our regular jollies down the pub business meetings, and one thing we were discussing was flash techniques (flash in the sense of those bright camera lighting thingies that make your pictures not dark – stop me if I’m getting too technical) Anyway, although we all use flash at weddings and shoots etc, we really fancied  exploring some creative flash techniques without the usual time constraints, so we decided to organise a full day shoot in a glossy fashion mag stylee. We found three fantastic models, Stef, Clare & Viv, who were all well up for striking poses (in the rain, natch) in an old mill-cum-mechanics’ yard – hardly the most glamourous of locations, but it worked perfectly for the cool grungy look we were trying to achieve. The girls were beautifully prepared for us by an amazing makeup artist KT who came up with some stunning looks for us.

Also can I mention Cris Matthews who spent the day with us and captured all of us on video during the day. We’re going to get it edited by next week so you will be able to see us in action and some of the behind the scenes stuff that was going on. Check back in a couple of days for a larger gallery of the day.

Joanne & James: Wedding 26th July 2009

joja10-009

Well, I’ve still got a couple of pre-wedding shoots to post about, but I thought I’d kick off this week’s blogging with the wedding we did yesterday.

We spent a great day with Joanne & James and their guests at Oulton Hall. It’s a fantastic venue and has recently been renovated and the rooms moved around. We haven’t worked there since the work has been done, and I have to say it looks absolutely stunning. The weather was a bit rainy on and off yesterday, but it was so gorgeous inside that it really didn’t matter.

I spent the morning at the hotel with Joanne and her entourage, while Lou whizzed off down the M1 to Steve, the best man’s, house to get some shots of the guys’ preparations. A special touch that James had organised was a gorgeous 1969 Mustang which had all the (male!) guests drooling when they arrived at Oulton Hall.

After a lovely ceremony in the newly refurbished Repton Lounge, everyone managed to get outside for a few group shots before the rain started again and we moved back inside for some more pictures and the wedding breakfast.

The evening reception was at the Claret Jug and Joanne and James wowed everyone with their first dance – a fantastic choreographed routine to an eclectic music mash-up which will no doubt find its way onto YouTube in the future – watch this space!

Joanne & James – we hope you had a fantastic day – we had a great time and loved being part of your day.

Phil & Lou xxx

Walking with Dinosaurs

Picture 5Picture 2I had a bit of father son time today. The girls went off to do girlie things while the boys went off to go and see ‘Walking with Dinosaurs’ Arena Show. If you have young kids ( probably boys ) They will absolutely love this. It was an amazing show. I see a lot of live events with The Sound Gallery but this was on a completely different scale. To see a full size T-Rex walk past you is a slightly daunting experience. Needless to say all the 5 year old boys in audience loved it and the bigger and louder the dinosaurs were the better. There are other live shows around the country until the end of August. If you are thinking of going and haven’t booked yet – then I suggest you do. You won’t be disappointed. Check the website out.

On a completely different note. Our wedding season kicks of again tomorrow with the wedding of Joanne & James. We have 10 weddings in the next 7 weeks so look out for future posts starting with tomorrows wedding on Monday.

Coast

brid-004

As I have mentioned earlier the kids finished school for the summer – The last few days we have been up on the East Coast. The British weather as usual is so unpredictable. We went from gorgeous blue sky white sand scenes like above – could this really be the North Sea or is it really the Maldives. Then 2 hours later it all changed and I captured the bottom image which to me really sums up the British Seaside.

The Wetspot – Wardrobe Leeds

wetspot-006

I had an interesting evening on Saturday at The Wardrobe in Leeds at their monthly burlesque and cabaret evening, the fantastically named Wet Spot. This was all a new experience for me, and made a real change from the usual grungy rockers from the Leeds music scene I’m used to photographing for The Sound Gallery. The lovely Ryvita Von Cheese was hostessing the evening and we were treated to some amazing performances by some of the top burlesque artists around. There was a real retro feel to proceedings, and everybody partied like it was 1949. ‘Twas all very cute and saucy and a little bit naughty, and the impeccably turned out ladies and gents in the audience had a blast. I must admit at first I felt a bit like this…picture-1

….but soon felt right at home and was happily snapping away.

Check out the TSG Blog for more images – but be warned: if you get a little bit quivery when you look at a bit of naked flesh then maybe you’d best stay here where it’s nice and cosy… I’ll put the kettle on, shall I?
